There are multiple reasons orangutan population is decreasing so much. As you can see on the graph orangutan population has dropped 16,400 in the last 25 years (as of 2015). Three main reasons are fires, palm oil plantations and poaching. To start off, fires burn habitats and all food sources. They cause orangutans to sometimes starve to death, These fires are caused by clearing of land. Also for undergrowth for farming and oil plantations. Palm Oil plantations are suppliers for a global market. The versatile oil id used for cooking, cosmetics and bio fuel. These palm oil plantations commonly kill of endangered species, cause global warming and replace tropical rain forests. The orangutans that are left starve, die in the fires or are killed by plantation workers. Poaching is the last main reason. Poaching and hunting infants threatened the species. Mothers are killed in order to sell their babies on the black market for pets. Rescued infants are helped by volunteers at orangutan rescue centers. The infants can be adopted for as little as $65.
